چکیده

nvestigations of the town ant, Atra texnnu (Buckley), revealed the structures of its alarm pheromones (Moser et ul., 1968) and one of its trail-following pheromones (Tumlinson el n/., 1971 ; Wood er a/., 1970). This ant is a pest of pine plantations and farm crops (Moser, 1962); hence chemicals which control its social behavior are of great concern. We have prepared a number of analogs of the trailfollowing pheromone, methyl 4-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylate (V), and have examined their biological activities. Furthermore, considerable interest exists in the mechanisms of insect olfaction (Schneider, 1971). Recent exciting work (Amoore er al., 1969; Blum et al., 1971 ; Tai er a/., 1971) has stressed the importance of conformational analysis in divining structure-activity relationships. The fairly rigid structure of V and its analogs greatly reduces the number of conformations with which one must contend. This should make arguments based on conformation somewhat more binding than those which have been applied recently to alarm (Amoore et a/., 1969), sex (Blum et al., 1971), and trail-following pheromones (Tai er ai., 1971).

A macroglomerulus in the antennal lobe of leaf-cutting ant workers and its possible functional significance.

Ants have a well-developed olfactory system, and pheromone communication is essential for regulating social life within their colonies. We compared the organization of primary olfactory centers (antennal lobes, ALs) in the brain of two closely related species of leaf-cutting ants (Atta vollenweideri, Atta sexdens). Both species express a striking size polymorphism associated with polyethism. We...

New Ant Colony Algorithm Method based on Mutation for FPGA Placement Problem

Many real world problems can be modelled as an optimization problem. Evolutionary algorithms are used to solve these problems. Ant colony algorithm is a class of evolutionary algorithms that have been inspired of some specific ants looking for food in the nature. These ants leave trail pheromone on the ground to mark good ways that can be followed by other members of the group. Ant colony optim...

Caste-Specific Expression Patterns of Immune Response and Chemosensory Related Genes in the Leaf-Cutting Ant, Atta vollenweideri

Leaf-cutting ants are evolutionary derived social insects with elaborated division of labor and tremendous colony sizes with millions of workers. Their social organization is mainly based on olfactory communication using different pheromones and is promoted by a pronounced size-polymorphism of workers that perform different tasks within the colony. The size polymorphism and associated behaviors...

Perceptual differences in trail-following leaf-cutting ants relate to body size.

Leaf-cutting ants of the genus Atta have highly size-polymorphic workers, and size is related to division of labor. We studied trail-following behavior of different-sized workers in a laboratory colony of Atta vollenweideri. For small and large workers, we measured responsiveness and preference to artificial conspecific and heterospecific pheromone trails made from poison gland extracts of A. v...

The Trail Pheromone of the Venomous Samsum Ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis

Ant species use branching networks of pheromone trails for orientation between nest and resources. The current study demonstrated that workers of the venomous samsum ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae), employ recruitment trail pheromones discharged from the Dufour's gland. Secretions of other abdomen complex glands, as well as hindgut gland secretions, di...
